JESUS, MORTAL

A symbol of the Christ-soul, or almost perfected personality, subject to the death of its lower nature.

"The Holy Spirit, by his influence and spiritual infusion, makes the earth conceive and bring forth the mortal Jesus, who, as hanging from every tree, is the life and salvation of men (Manichæan doctrine). - AUGUSTINE, Manichæan Heresy, p. 366.

The Higher Self brooding over the highest part of the lower nature (earth) so purifies and fructifies it that it is enabled to bear and bring forth the Christ-soul (Jesus) within the many souls of humanity. In each soul the incarnate Christ inheres within the personality, as it were, hanging from the "Tree of Life" or Divine ray within it, as that which shall redeem it from evil, perfect it, and raise it to the life immortal.

“The Wisdom of God Incarnate is represented by the Tree,' as where it is written thereon, She is a tree of life to them that lay hold on Her.'. . . And what is denoted by the title of the tree,' but the life of the righteous." - ST. GREGORY, Morals on the Book of Job, Vol. II. p. 48.
