GENESIS 4

Cain and Abel
1And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. 2And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. 4And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: 5But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. 6And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

“And Adam (mind) knew Eve (emotions) his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD”

CONCEPTION OF CHILDREN - Symbolic of the formation in the mind of new ideas and generalizations, produced by thought and emotion. All children in the bible are representations of our thoughts. Male children typically are intellectual thoughts. Female children are typically emotional thoughts.

By conception' is signified all thought. By the sons whom she would bring forth in sorrow' are signified the truths which she would thus produce." - SWEDENBORG, Arcana Coelestia

CAIN - A symbol of the center of the personality-the I am I feeling in the lower mind, which causes the illusion of separateness, and represents the lower self.

"Cain was a tiller of the ground." – Cain toiled in the lower mind

The sense of self and separateness supervises the growth of the lower desires which spring from the lower nature.

"That is not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterwards that which is spiritual (1 Cor. xv. 46). What is first developed out of man is carnal, that 'carnal mind which is enmity against God; which is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.' (ROM. viii. 7). This is Cain. But there is a second birth; another life is born, which by grace springs out of the same old Adam; and this second birth, this 'spiritual mind,' is Abel." - A. JUKES, Types of Genesis, p. 88.

In the human mind the “first born” (Cain) is the lower mind. It is not until later that the “second born” (Abel) comes along. This is one of the most persistent themes in the bible. There is not a single first born son who God has favor with. This is because the first born is the lower (carnal) mind and it is enmity to God.

“Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD”
Cain (the natural first born ego) brought of the fruit of the ground (the thoughts that grow from our lower “carnal” mind) an offering unto the LORD. It is important to understand scripture is only talking about you and your relationship with creation. You are the “lord” of your mind and what it creates. When your ego brings ideas to you it is your job to discern them. At the end of the cycle you will then bring your creations before God. Those of your Cain will be discarded and those of your Abel will be blessed.

ABEL, KEEPER OF SHEEP - A symbol of the dawning of, that moral element in the soul which works by love. This state is a faint correspondence of the Higher Self, and tends the virtues (sheep).

"Until the soul brought forth the God-loving doctrine (Abel), the self-loving (Cain) dwelt with her. But when she brought forth Abel,' or harmony with God, she abandoned harmony with that mind 'Cain' which was wise in its own conceit."- PHILO JUDEUS, Works, YONGE, Vol. IV. p. 207.

LAMB - A world-symbol of sacrifice :- born in order to die for human advantage.

SHEEP - A symbol of the higher qualities, virtues, or living truths, which are the sustenance of the soul.

FLOCKS OF SHEEP ON THE EARTH - Symbolic of virtues evolved from the lower nature.

SHEPHERD - A symbol of the Higher Self who leads the higher qualities upwards, or tends the spiritual monads who incarnate in human forms.

YIMA-KHSHAÊTA (JAMSHED) - A symbol of the Higher Self or Divine Ego.

"A son was born to Vivanhâo, Yima. khshaêta, who had abundance of flocks, the most glorious of those born; the most sun-like of men; that he made during his reign over the earth; men and cattle free from death; water and trees free from drought, and they were eating inexhaustible food." - Homa Yasht. (Zoroaster Hymn)

"And when the burnt-offering is placed upon it he shall burn the fat of the peace offering' (LEV. vi. 12). For whoever kindles within himself this fire of love, places himself upon it as burnt offering, because he burns out every fault, which wickedly lived within him. For when he examines the secrets of his own thoughts, and sacrifices his wicked life, by the sword of conversion, he has placed himself on the altar of his own heart, and kindled himself with the fire of love. And the fat of the peace offerings smells sweetly from this victim; because the inward fatness of new love, making peace between ourselves and God, emits from us the sweetest odor. But since this selfsame love continues inextinguishable in the heart of the Elect, it is there fitly subjoined, 'This is that perpetual fire, which will never go out on the altar' (LEV. vi. 13). This fire in truth will never go out on the altar, because the glow of love increases in their minds even after this life." - GREGORY THE GREAT, Morals on the Book of Job, Vol. III. pp. 105-6.

COUNTENANCE, OR FACE - A symbol of a mental aspect of the feelings or emotions.

"But unto Cain and to his offering He had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?"

But the lower nature (Cain), as such, could not be received by the Higher. And the earlier stages of evolution of the lower self (Cain) are attended by a great sense of restraint and hardship. And the Higher Self questions within the lower mind as to why it is suffering through its experiences.

ORIGINAL SIN - A symbol of the negative state of ignorance and imperfection which originates in the process of involution, through the limitation of Spirit by matter. This necessitates the subsequent evolution of Spirit from the lowest condition of ignorance to the highest state of Truth.

Cain Murders Abel
8And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

9And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper? 10And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. 11And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand; 12When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. 13And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me. 15And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

16And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

CAIN - A symbol of the center of the personality-the I am I feeling in the lower mind, which causes the illusion of separateness, and represents the lower self.

ABEL - A symbol of the dawning of, that moral element in the soul which works by love. This state is a faint correspondence of the Higher Self, and tends the virtues (sheep).

After birth it is our lower mind that develops first (Cain). Later our spiritual mind (Abel the second born) develops. The Lower mind does have the ability to overpower our spiritual mind or aspirations. Almost every day Cain kills Abel in our being and every time we find Cain or become aware of him we slay him so that Abel may live.

"The feeling of each one of us that we have a Cain and Abel within, and that our business here is to reverse the Scripture story and to make our Abel kill our Cain, is in itself a kind of revelation and an element of immense hope about the future." - J. BRIERLEY, Studies of the Soul, p. 214.

FIELD - A symbol of the lower nature; the arena within which the soul's evolution takes place.

The human organism on the lower planes is the field of experience. To know it all is to rise above it and become one with the Higher Self. The human organism comprises the four vehicles of the soul on the four planes of nature; i.e. the causal, mental, astral, and physical human bodies. It is through these bodies that the indwelling spiritual ego must manifest his nature, and he can only do so by fully understanding and controlling them. When he has mastered the lower qualities, he has developed the higher, and the consciousness rises to the higher planes and to union with the Higher Self.

BLOOD - A symbol of the Divine Life manifested on the lower planes, either in a higher or a lower sense.
"But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat." - GENESIS. ix. 3.

GROUND: EARTH - A symbol of the lower nature of the soul, which requires tilling ' and "sowing to produce good "fruit."

“Therefore the Lord God sent him (Adam) forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken."

So the mind having ceased to be influenced from the buddhic plane (Eden) is directed by the Supreme law towards the lower plane activities whereof its own nature has been built up.

VOICE OF GOD, VOICE OF ABEL - Symbolic of the higher nature calling from within to the lower mind (ground). The expression of the conscience in the personality.

CURSE - A symbol of limitation of activity through Divine laws and conditions imposed upon matter.

CURSE ON THE GROUND - A symbol of limitation of the activities of the lower nature by moral law, through suffering.

MOUTH FOR RECEIVING FOOD - A symbol of capacity for sensuous enjoyment.

“the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand”
The lower mind (earth) has consumed (mouth to receive) the divine life (brothers blood) by your [Cains] doing. That which was holy has been slain by the carnal mind. All religions are from and serve the carnal mind.

MATTER (FEMININE) - A term for the complement of Spirit in the primal duality of Spirit and Matter. It is that aspect of manifestation which receives qualities and takes forms; and this it does from the action of Spirit upon it; Spirit being replete with all potencies and knowledges from all eternity.

TILLER or HUSBANDMAN - A symbol of the Higher Self as the tiller and sower of the lower nature (earth), so that it should bring forth a harvest of the "fruits of the Spirit on the buddhic plane.

Cain, the lower (carnal) mind, is now cursed (limited) in that the lower mind will no longer produce fruits of the spirit. It is not until we separate ourselves from our carnal thoughts that we will once again produce fruit of the spirit.

FACE OF THE GROUND - A symbol of the knowledge of appearances, or of the surfaces of things of the lower nature.

“Behold, thou hast driven me (Cain) out this day from the face of the ground; and from thy face shall I be hid."

The lower self, or personality, is brought to realize that it may no longer depend upon the lower knowledge for subsistence or satisfaction, and it cannot tell where to seek for food convenient to its evolving nature. It does not yet know the Higher Self or source of its inspiration.

ATOM, PERMANENT ASTRAL - An atom on the astral plane attached to each causal-body, and forming a center for personality in the whole series of incarnations.

"And the Lord said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord appointed a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should smite him."

And the Divine Wisdom-love pronounced a benediction upon that Individuality within, which shall not be slain, and decreed that "seven-fold" shall be the suffering which shall come about when the lower self by the Higher Self is slain. And a “sign” or permanent astral atom, is provided, which answers to the personality throughout the cycle.

“Each man who is born into the world is provided with an imperishable bone in his present physical body, and it is from or on this that his organization will be built up anew at the time of the resurrection (Zohar). - A. E. WAITE, Secret Doctrine, p. 187.

BONES OR SKELETON - A symbol of the spiritual nature to which the higher and lower qualities of the soul are attached.

NOD, LAND OF - A symbol of the three lower planes in the soul.

"And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden."

And the personality goes forth from the Lord; i.e. at the command of the Higher Self it emerges into activity, and in its sheaths dwells on the lower-mental, astral and physical planes, below the buddhic plane (Eden) which is reflected in the personality.

"By Cain's going out from the faces of Jehovah' is signified that he was separated from the good of faith grounded in love. By his dwelling in the land of Nod' is signified his abode out of goodness and truth. Towards the east of Eden' signifies near the intellectual mind, where love was before." - SWEDEN-BORG, Arc. Cel. to Gen. iv. 16.

CARDINAL DIRECTION - The bible makes a lot of references to the cardinal directions. The bible uses cardinal directions as symbolic metaphors that describe our four basic mental processes or state of being. Take note of this symbolism when interpreting the bible stories.

North / Up = Spiritual
South / Down = Emotional
East / Right = Intellectual / God
West / Left = Physical / You

The Descendants of Cain
17And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch. 18And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech. 19And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. 20And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle. 21And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ. 22And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.

23And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.

24If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

The descendants of Cain are the thought progressions (evolution) of the lower mind.

CAIN - A symbol of the center of the personality-the I am I feeling in the lower mind, which causes the illusion of separateness, and represents the lower self.

"Cain was a tiller of the ground.". - GENESIS. iv. 2.
The sense of self and separateness supervises the growth of the lower desires which spring from the lower nature.

KNOWER OF THE FIELD (KSHETRA) - Kshetram (Kshetra) literally means “a place”.
A symbol of the omniscient Higher Self as the tiller and sower of the lower nature, in order that it should bring forth fruit.

As the higher mind acquires power, so the lower quality is transmuted into buddhic quality,-knowledge in the lower mind is turned to wisdom, and experience to love.

WIFE - A symbol of the emotion-nature (woman) in alliance with the mind (man).

“Cain knew his wife” – The lower mind (Cain) acquires the wisdom or “knows” of the spirit his “wife”. The mind understands its emotional nature and conceives new thoughts and understandings “Enoch”.

ENOCH - A symbol of the individuality ; that part of the soul which survives physical and astral dissolution,— or the first and second deaths, and is immortal.

ENOCH, SON OF CAIN - A symbol of aspiration proceeding from the personality.

CITY OR TOWN - A symbol of a center of activity or functioning, upon the buddhic, mental, and astral planes, to which the qualities (people) are attached, and about which they may congregate.

"And Cain builded a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son Enoch."

The personality (Cain) having acquired the quality aspiration (Enoch), was enabled to form a mental center (city), and to this fixed point in the mind, aspiration was attached.

IRAD, SON OF FIRST ENOCH - A symbol of faith, the product of aspiration.

MEHUJAEL AND METHUSHAEL - Symbols of the states, or qualities, of courage and endurance.

LAMECH, SON OF METHUSHAEL - A symbol of reflection proceeding from endurance.

ADAH AND ZILLAH , WIVES OF LAMECH - Symbols of theory and practice , or wisdom and experience utilized, in alliance with reflection.

JABAL, SON OF LAMECH AND ADAH - A symbol of the germ stage of the transient emotions, produced by reflection and experience.

"Lamech said, Adah and Zillah hear my voice . For I have slain a man for wounding me , and a young man for bruising me: if Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold."
Reflection calls upon theory and practice to attend to its cogitations. For reflection has killed out somewhat of the prejudice (young man) with which the mind started on its evolution . If the lower personality (Cain) be the means of causing sorrow, surely the reflective mind shall cause much more sorrow.

"By Adah ' is signified the mother of the celestial and spiritual of that Church by Zillah ,' the mother of the natural things of the same Church ."- SWEDENBORG , Arc . Cel. to Genesis. , iv. 19 .

TENT OR HUT - A symbol of the mental vehicle in which are concepts and opinions of the lower mind.

CATTLE, OR OXEN - A symbol of those emotions of the lower nature, which are under control of the higher nature; or of the higher desires among the astral qualities, wherein buddhi is reflected through the desire-nature.

JUBAL, SON OF LAMECH AND ADAH - A symbol of the germ of higher emotions aroused through reflection (Lamech) and experience (Adah).

"And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and pipe."
Allied with the transient emotions were the higher emotions, and the germ of these gave rise to the emotions of truth, wisdom, and love, which bring harmonious conditions into the life of the soul.

TUBALCAIN, FORGER OF CUTTING INSTRUMENTS OF METAL - A symbol of the dawn of the intellect with its incisive powers of analysis and discrimination.

NAAMAH, THE SISTER OF TUBAL CAIN - A symbol of the intuition element which is associated with the discriminative and analytical intellect.

SEVEN, NUMBER - This is a perfect number and signifies completion or consummation. It follows six, which stands for completeness of process. Applied chronologically, seven indicates the beginning and the ending of a cycle, "alpha and omega."

The Evolution of the Mind…
Adam, Higher (the divine nature of humanity)
Adam, Lower (ruler of the soul's lower qualities)
Eve (emotion-nature of the lower mind)
Cain (the “I Am” of the lower mind)
Abel (moral element in the soul which works by love)
Enoch (aspiration)
Irad (faith)
Mehujael (courage)
Methusael (endurance)
Lamech (reflection)
Adah (female – theory / wisdom – The mother of spirit)
Jabal (transient emotions, produced by reflection and experience)
Jubal (higher emotions aroused through reflection and experience)
Zillah (female – practice / experience – The mother of nature)
Tubalcain (intellect, analysis, discrimination)
Naamah (intuition)

Seth and Enosh
25And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. 26And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.

SETH, SON OF ADAM - A symbol of hope, or mental desire for immortality, a sense of the real within.

SEED - A symbol of the manifesting God, the source of all things.

“And Eve bare a son, and called his name Seth for, said she, God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel; for Cain slew him."
And the lower emotion-nature expands and realizes more of the nature within the soul, so that it is vouchsafed Hope (Seth). The emotion-nature (Eve) now realizes that it may be receptive of that which cannot be taken away,-hope being a promise of eternal life. The self (lower) is slain by the Self (higher), but this perception of the real Self shall not be slain.

ENOSH, SON OF SETH - A symbol of increased faith in the Divine nature within the soul.
"The name of the son of Seth was Enos, and Enos means hope." - PHILO, Works, Yonge, Vol. IV. p. 276.

BEGETTING SONS AND DAUGHTERS - Symbolic of mind and emotion creating, or giving rise to, states of reason and affection.

“Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.”
It is not until we have faith in the Divine (Enosh) that we begin to call upon the Lord.

The Descendants of Adam
1This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; 2Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.

3And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth: 4And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters: 5And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.

6And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat Enos: 7And Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters: 8And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died.

9And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan: 10And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters: 11And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died.

12And Cainan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalaleel: 13And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters: 14And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died.

15And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared: 16And Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters: 17And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died.

PATRIARCHS OF GENESIS
Symbols of the successive stages of growth in the evolution of the consciousness, within which stages the several powers and virtues are developed and realised, by means of which the ego is gradually built up, until finally the “Noah,”- -or Self to be ensheathed in the causal-body (ark),—is arrived at. The lives of the patriarchs signify the periods, and their names serve to the successive effects with antecedent spiritual causes.

"This fifth chapter of Genesis treateth in particular concerning the propagation of the Most Ancient Church, through successive generations, even almost to the flood. The Most Ancient Church, which was celestial, is what is called Man and a likeness of God. A second Church which was not so celestial as the former is called 'Seth.' A third, 'Enos.' A fourth, 'Canaan.' A fifth, 'Mahaleel.' A sixth, Jared.' A seventh, 'Enoch.' An eighth, Methusaleh,' etc." - SWEDENBORG, Arc. Cel. to Gen. v.

"Church signifies an inner state of the soul, or the religious consciousness.

“This is the book of the generations of Adam.” -
Now follows an evolution of the "Adam" (mind) an account of the principle, which is perfection of the soul according to its stage of development.

"In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam in the day when they were created."
This passage refers first to the progeny of the mind, which are thought -states which proceeded successively when the mind came forth in its perfection as the image of God. The mind was endowed with "sparks" of the eternal "Fire," namely the reason and intuitive principles. The "blessing" signifies the Divine Will operating through the human consciousness. The reference to the reason and intuition being "Adamic” implies that the intellect is supreme over the intuition first of all.

“made he him; male and female” –
When the mind is whole it is both male (mind) and female (spirit). When we are male (mind) without the female (spirit) we are Cain (lower mind ego).

DAY - A symbol of a period of activity upon the upper planes.

MALE-FEMALE - The sex principle symbolizes the dual aspects of the manifest which always present themselves in the evolution of the Cosmos,-such as spirit-matter, life-form, force-matter, love-wisdom, mind-emotion, intellect-intuition.

SONS AND DAUGHTERS - Symbols of opinions or ideas, and of feelings or emotions, -the progeny of mind and emotion. Or, the higher mental qualities and the buddhic emotions,--the progeny of the Spirit.

“And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years” – 130 : 1+3 = 4
FOUR, NUMBER - North, East, South, West – Spiritual, Intellectual, Emotional, Physical Or just “You”

This statement is to indicate that the number four applies rather to the natural order of things, the quaternary, and does not include the spiritual (Olympus).

"Four is symbolic of the world, and nature, and of man by nature." - J. GARNIER, The Worship of the Dead, p. 220.

SETH, SON OF ADAM - A symbol of hope, or mental desire for immortality, a sense of the real within.

“the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years” – 800 = 8
EIGHT, NUMBER - A symbol of entrance into a new state or condition of the soul, the number seven signifying completion of the former state. Or the symbol may refer to duality of aspects on the four lower planes. Once Adam entered the “new state” of mind he had many sons and daughters (opinions, ideas, feelings, emotions, etc.)

“Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years” – 930 : 9+3 = 12
TWELVE, NUMBER - A complete number in relation to conditions of the manifest. The twelve divisions of the cycle of life (Zodiac, Tuat, etc.) correspond to soul-states (twelve tribes) and soul-qualities (twelve disciples). The sets of twelve are all interrelated. Twelve is symbolic of spiritual perfection and completion. Adam became the perfected mind and died, Adam the man died because he became perfected, he became the Christ.

“And Seth lived an hundred and five years” – 105 : 1+5 = 6
SIX, NUMBER - A symbol of accomplishment of growth or purpose ;-the number which limits and serves to usher in the seventh, that of perfection. It signifies completion of a period of activity, as six days, six hours, six signs, six months, six seasons, six years.

ENOSH, SON OF SETH - A symbol of increased faith in the Divine nature within the soul.
"The name of the son of Seth was Enos, and Enos means hope."
- PHILO, Works, Yonge, Vol. IV. p. 276.
After Seth (hope) was accomplished (#6) faith and Divine nature within the soul developed.

“Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters” – 807 : 8+7 = 15
FIFTEEN, NUMBER - A number signifying completeness of condition or period. It is a multiple of three, a perfect number, - and five, the number of the manifest planes.

“all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died” – 912 : 9+1+2 = 12
Like Adam Seth is also a number 12, complete manifestation. Seth became the perfected mind and died to the physical.

“And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan – 90 : 9+0 = 9
NINE, NUMBER - The number three is the number of perfection and completeness. Nine, which is three squared, refers to the attainment of perfection on the three lower planes. Nine is also the number of consciousness.

Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters” – 850 : 8+5+0 = 13
THIRTEEN, NUMBER - A symbol signifying completeness or infinity. It is a "holy number," and cannot be divided.

"As the number of the lunar months, thirteen is the symbol of the Woman, and denotes the Soul and her reflection of God-the solar number twelve being that of the Spirit. The two numbers in combination form the perfect year of that dual humanity which above is made in the image of God-the true Christian Year,' wherein the two-the inner and the outer, Spirit and Matter-are as one. Thirteen then represents that full union of man with God wherein Christ becomes Christ." - The Perfect Way, p. 247.

“And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died” – 905: 9+0+5 = 14 1+4 = 5
FIVE, NUMBER
- This number appears in Scriptures most often in two relations, namely, the planes of manifestation and the senses. Five elements, five worlds, five intercalary days, and five gathas are symbols of the five planes. Five brethren of Dives, five Karap brothers, five foolish virgins, five companies of dead men, five barley loaves, five-pronged fork, are symbols of the five senses.

"Five is symbolic of imperfection, or incompletion generally." - J. GARNIER, Worship of the Dead, p. 220.

“And Cainan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalaleel” – 70: 7+0 = 7
SEVEN, NUMBER - This is a perfect number and signifies completion or consummation. It follows six, which stands for completeness of process. Applied chronologically, seven indicates the beginning and the ending of a cycle, "alpha and omega."

“Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters” – 840: 8+4+0 = 12
TWELVE, NUMBER - A complete number in relation to conditions of the manifest.

“all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died” – 910: 9+1+0 = 10
TEN, NUMBER - A symbol of completion of a process, or accomplishment of a purpose.

"This number ten signifies perfection; for to the number seven, which embraces all created things, is added the trinity of the Creator.' - AUGUSTINE, Manichaean Heresy, p. 107.

“Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared” – 65: 6+5 = 11
ELEVEN - This signifies the eleventh stage of the evolution of qualities in the forms of matter in which they manifest: the twelfth stage being the final. - See MATTHEW xx. 6.

“Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters” – 830: 8+3+0 = 11

“all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died” – 895: 8+9+5 = 22
20 – The joining of body and spirit
2 - The duality of manifestation, the One becoming Two,- Spirit and Matter. Also of the relative, the opposites, higher and lower, good and evil, etc.

2+2 = 4
FOUR, NUMBER
- North, East, South, West – Spiritual, Intellectual, Emotional, Physical Or just “you”.
