NEPHESH, THE LOWER SOUL, OR ANIMAL PRINCIPLE

A symbol of the emotion-nature in the astral body, or astro-mental body. The lower emotions.

"The (lower) Rua'h forms with the Nephesh the actual personality of the Rua'h is that which rides on that Nephesh (the lower soul) and rules over her, and lights her with everything she needs, and the Nephesh is the throne to that Rua'h" (From the Zohar). - I. MYER, Qabbalah, pp. 391, 393.

The lower mind (ruah) energized by the emotion-nature constitutes the lower personality in the human soul. The lower mind is that which regulates the emotion-nature, and controls it, and also brings intelligence to bear on all methods of supplying the needs of the desires. The astral body is the vehicle, or instrument, of the lower mind and emotions.
