YOMI (DARKNESS), LAND OF, OR BOTTOM COUNTRY

A symbol of the lower quaternary, or underworld.

"Yomi is spoken of as the abode of Susa-no-wo, who, according to one myth, was appointed to rule this region. We also hear of the deities of Yomi, the armies of Yomi, the ugly females of Yomi, and the Road-wardens of Yomi." - W. G. ASTON, Shinto, p. 54.

The lower planes constitute the realm over which the desire-nature (Susa-no-wo) presides. The "deities and armies" of Yomi are the desires, the "ugly females" are the lower emotions or passions, and the "Road-wardens" are aspirations on the upward path, or moral regulations in the lower mind to "make straight the way of the Lord."
