WOMAN AS GODDESS
A symbol of the Wisdom principle, Buddhi, from
which the higher emotions proceed.
"I (Lakshmi) reside in milk, butter, fresh grass, honey and sour
milk; in the body of a married woman, in the frame of an unmarried
damsel. . . . I reside in women who wear proper ornaments always,
who are devoted to their husbands, whose speeches are kind." -
Institutes of Vishnu, XCIX. 14, 21.
The "Goddess Lakshmi," being a symbol of the buddhic principle, the
remaining symbols are found to signify the higher emotions in which
buddhi resides. (The ancient writer gives a long and correct list of
symbols of the buddhic emotions, only a few of which symbols are
given above.)
