WHEAT

A symbol of that spiritual seed which is sown in the lower nature (earth) and its fruit reaped in the higher, and so becomes the nourishment of the causal-body, and the food of the ideals (gods). The Divine germ (wheat), operating in the lower emotions, causes eventually their transmutation into higher emotions.

“Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.” — John xii. 24, 25.

Except the Divine Spirit — the fructifying Germ — descend into the lower nature (ground) and “die,” that is, become latent, it would abide alone on high; but if it become latent in the evolving qualities of the soul, it will be the means of their transmutation to higher planes, there to constitute the treasure laid up in heaven for the many souls who have struggled upward to the light of love and truth. A soul that remains attached to the out‑going desire‑life, loses that life; while a soul that detaches itself from the life of the lower planes is thereby possessed of the immortal life of the higher.

“Christ puts not bread into our hands, but seed corn; and although we carry away the full sack whenever we go to our Brother and ask Him to feed our hungriness, it is germinal principles that He gives us rather than loaves, and we have got to cultivate them and watch them, and patiently, too, in the belief that He will bless the springing thereof, and after many days we shall find seed for new sowing, as well as bread for the eater!” — A. MacLaren, *Sermons*, 3rd Series, p. 76.
