TEN, NUMBER

A symbol of completion of a process, or accomplishment of a purpose. It is also a sacred number and bears reference to the line and the circle O, which produce a cross X only when the lower nature is acting in opposition to the higher.

"Ten-is symbolic of natural perfection and completion in general.” - J. GARNIER, Worship of the Dead, p. 221.

"That ten days signify duration of state to the full is because 'days' signify states, and ten' what is full; for times in the Word signify states, and numbers designate their quality." - SWEDENBORG, Apocalypse Revealed, n. 101.

"This number ten signifies perfection; for to the number seven, which embraces all created things, is added the trinity of the Creator.' - AUGUSTINE, Manichaean Heresy, p. 107.

"And as Jesus entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off and they lifted up their voices, saying, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go and show yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, with a loud voice glorifying God, etc." – LUKE xvii. 12-19.

The cry of the ten lepers is the appeal of the troubled lower self to the Christ within, who directs that the restoration to health of mind and spirit be accomplished by ordinary and familiar means, viz. means consistent with the ethical and religious ideals (priests) of the personality. The lepers are said to be cleansed of their infirmity, though only one returns to render thanks; thus signifying that the majority of the qualities,- nine,—were as yet active only on a lower plane, whereas the tenth quality, the one who returned glorifying God, was lifted up above his former position, or, in other words, the state or condition of soul into which he now entered was one of increased usefulness.

"By the number 'ten' the sum of perfection is set forth." - ST. GREGORY, Morals on the Book of Job, Vol. I. p. 43.
