STONE OR ROCK
A symbol of Spirit, because it is a
substance unreceptive, resisting impression, firm. The opposite of
matter, which is receptive, takes impressions, and is resolvable or
unstable.
"It is by means of God,-the Divine Spirit working within him to
build him up in the Divine meanwhile co-operating with the Spirit,
that man achieves Divinity. In the familiar but rarely understood
terms, ‘Philosopher's Stone,’ ‘Elixir of Life,’ ‘universal
Medicine,’ ‘holy Grail,’ and the like, is implied this supreme
object of all quest. For these are but terms to denote pure Spirit,
and its essential correlative, a Will absolutely firm and
inaccessible alike to weakness from within and assault from
without." - The Perfect Way, p. 218.
"Mitama (Japanese word for) spirit. Mi is simply a honorific prefix.
Tama mean something valuable, as a jewel. Owing to its precious
quality, it is used symbolically for the most sacred emanation from
the God, and also for the human life or soul." - W. G. ASTON,
Shinto, p. 27.
"In Holy Scripture stones are to be taken sometimes on the side of
bad and sometimes on the side of good. For when a stone' is put for
insensibility, by stones' we have hard hearts denoted. Whence also
it is said by John: God is able of these stones to raise up children
unto Abraham' who surely, by the name of stones,' denotes the hearts
of the Gentiles, at that time hard and insensible in respect of
unbelief. And by the Prophet, the Lord promises, saying, ‘And I will
take the stony heart out of your flesh, and will give you an heart
of flesh' (EZEK. xi. 19). Again, by 'stones' the minds of the strong
ones are used to be denoted. And hence it is said by Peter, Ye also
as lively stones, etc.' - ST. GREGORY THE GREAT, Morals on the Book
of Job, Vol. 1I. p. 354.
"By a stone is signified truth." - SWEDENBORG, Apor. Rev., n. 791.
"When the final barrier has been passed, and the final victory won,
God will give us to eat of the hidden manna -the sustenance of the
life eternal that knows neither limit nor decay-and the white stone,
the shining jewel, the pure soul, which is the resplendent
reflection of his own glory, and the undimmed revelation of what we
eternally are in Christ." - R. J. CAMPBELL, Serm., Winning the
Divine Name.
"There was a precious stone, lustrous and resplendent for that is
the force of the word white here, not a dead white, but a brilliant
coruscating white-on which there was something written which no eye
but one ever saw,-that mysterious seat of revelation and direction
known in the Old Testament by the name of Urim and Thummim (that is
lights and perfectnesses), enclosed within the folds of the High
Priest's breast-plate, which none but the High Priest ever beheld. .
. . 'I will give him a new name '—a deeper, a more inward, a fresh
knowledge and revelation of my own character-as eternal love,
eternal wisdom, all-sufficient, absolute power, the home and
treasure, and joy and righteousness of the whole heart and spirit.'
- A. MACLAREN, Sermons, 3rd Series, pp. 82-4.
“Spirit alone is substance, and matter is a manifestation of
spirit." - W. S. LILLY, Ancient Religion, p. vii.
