SPENTO MAINYUSH, AND ANGRO MAINYUSH; THE GOOD AND EVIL SPIRITS

Symbols of the positive principle of Right and Truth, and the negative principle of Wrong and Error.

"Thou (Homa said) madest all the demons hide themselves beneath the earth, who formerly flew about the earth in human shape, O Zarathustra ! who wert the strongest, most active, and triumphant of the creatures of the two spirits, Spento Mainyush and Angro Mainyush." - Homa Yasht, Haug, Essays.

And now it is that the nature-spirits (demons), which were originally, as it were, let loose upon the lower planes, are relegated to the lowest sub-planes, that is, as the out-breathing of intelligence from above informs the matter of the lower planes, the organisation of the particles serves to interfere with, or restrain, the natural behaviour of the elemental forces and guide thein in their activities. The Soul (Zarathustra) is the strongest, most active and victorious of beings, inasmuch as, so soon as it commences its individual evolution, it proves that it is capable of demonstrating that from the spirit within proceeds the overcoming of wrong (negative) by right (positive).
