SOWING AND REAPING

Symbolic of the karmic law of cause and effect in the process of spiritual evolution. According to the kinds of action, so are the fruits of action.

“Within the Garden of Rest wherein I am; I feast therein; I sow therein; I reap therein; I plough therein; I wed therein.” — *Book of the Dead*, Ch. CX.

I, the True Self, enjoy the experiences which are collected through me and transmuted. From my abode in the causal‑body I sow and I reap that which the lower self appears to do and undergo. The “ploughing” signifies the forming of the bodies and conditions in which the lower self acts. The “wedding” is the union between the liberated lower Self and Myself, where we twain are One.

“As he soweth so shall he reap; human life is lost without virtue. O silly one, happiness is obtained by being a slave to virtue. She who under the Guru's instruction abandoneth evil shall be absorbed in the Perfect One” (Guru Nanak). — Macauliffe, *The Sikh Religion*, Vol. I, p. 270.

“Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” — Galatians vi. 7.

“God is the original sower. He has taken of His own eternal life and sown it upon the earth as upon a ploughed field. Into every human heart some of that divine seed has fallen, and will spring up and grow as we give it opportunity. Ever and anon it ripens into the full corn in the ear, some perfect revealing of some aspect of eternal truth. Then it is reaped; for the man in whom that fruitage appears remains to all eternity what he has thus achieved. Nor does the process stop there. Every consecrated life becomes the spiritual seed of other lives in which Christ has yet to be formed. God is still the sower, but He is continually taking of the harvest of some beautiful character or noble deed and sowing it afresh that it may reproduce itself in the harvests of generations to come.” — R. J. Campbell, Serm., *Reaping for Eternal Life*.
