SEED, GOOD

A symbol of the germs of the higher emotions arising from buddhi.

“The seed is the word of God. And those by the wayside are they that have heard: then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word from their heart that they may not believe and be saved.” — Luke viii. 12–15.

The “word of God” is the Divine expression, the breathing of the Spirit (buddhi), the higher emotional influx. Those “by the wayside” are those qualities which are not yet on the direct path to peace. They are therefore unable to receive the “good seed,” which cannot germinate while the desire‑nature (the devil) rules them. They cannot “believe,” that is, unite or be in harmony with the higher nature, and therefore cannot be “saved” or transmuted.

“Seed from a celestial origin is of such a nature, that love ruleth the whole mind and maketh it one; for the human mind consisteth of two parts — will and understanding; love or good belongeth to the will; faith or truth belongeth to the understanding.” — Swedenborg, *Arc. Cel. to Gen.*, iii. 24.

“Christ is the material out of which the thread of humanity has been spun; his is the seed‑life which dies in the darkness and sorrow of earth to rise in divine beauty and splendour in the garden of God.” — R. J. Campbell, Serm., *Revelation Manifold*.

Christ is the Archetypal Man, who dies in involution and becomes the human race in sorrow and suffering, from whence in evolution he rises in the souls of humanity through wisdom and love on the buddhic plane (Eden).

“The seeds of God‑like power are in us still. Gods are we, bards, saints, heroes, if we will.” — Matthew Arnold.

“The parents of the wonderful child are Setme Khamuas and his wife. Before the conception of their son, the mother is told in a dream to eat of the seeds of a certain plant; and it is revealed to the father that the child shall be known as Si‑Osiri (son of Osiris).” — Griffith, *Stories of the High Priests*.

The “parents” are symbols of Spirit and Matter. Before the conception of their Divine Son, the Mother is told to “eat of the seeds of a certain plant”; which means that before the Soul is embodied in matter, the Mother partakes of the seeds of the Tree of the Divine Life — that is, matter is prepared and energised by the Spirit which is to confer immortality upon the Soul. Spirit then forms within the purified receptive matter of the lower planes, at a certain stage of development, the indwelling Saviour or Son of God.

Job xxxviii. 30 means that the Lord first waters in a wondrous manner the soil of our hearts for the reception of the seeds of the word, by the secret rain of His grace, and that He afterwards keeps it down by the discipline of His secret dispensation lest it should bring forth too luxuriantly with the virtues it has conceived, in order that the rigour of discipline may likewise bind that which the rain of grace irrigates.” — St. Gregory, *Morals on the Book of Job*, Vol. III, p. 347.

“In man's deepest nature lies hidden the seed of infinite possibilities, and the spirit of God must find access to that seed in order to germinate it into actual life. He may not do this by bringing any influences to bear upon them from without. His Spirit must brood within over the seed if it is ever to come to life. He stands at the door and knocks because He must be intelligently and willingly admitted, otherwise He cannot brood over the hidden seeds of eternity within.” — J. Mackenzie, *New Reformer*, Aug. 1913.
