SALT, SALTINESS

A symbol of truth regarded as the means by permeation of raising the qualities.

"Salt is good: but if the salt have lost its saltness, wherewith will ye season it? have salt in yourselves, and be at peace one with another." - MARK ix. 50.

Truth is to be sought. Error can be no substitute for truth. Without truth there can be no progress. Truth is the element of equity or equality which makes for peace in the soul, and is an ingredient in the spiritual man. Moreover, that salt is believed to be the savour of those two, the sky and the earth." - Sata. Brâh. II. 1, 1, 6.

“The sky and the earth were originally close together. On being separated they said to each other, 'Let there be a common sacrificial essence for us!' What sacrificial essence there was belonging to yonder sky, that it bestowed on this earth, that became the salt in the earth; and what sacrificial essence there was belonging to yonder sky, that became the black spots in the moon." - Tait. Bráh, I. 1, 3, 2.

Spirit and matter were originally combined. When they separated into higher and lower natures, it became necessary that there should be a reciprocating medium between them and a means for raising the lower to the higher. The higher nature possesses love of the truth which the lower requires, and the higher is ready to bestow truth in response to the efforts and aspirations of the lower. When the desires are sacrificed for love of the higher qualities, truth (salt) permeates the lower nature (earth). Love of truth in the higher nature is reflected as recognition of defects and ignorance (black spots) in the lower mind or personality (moon).

Salt in the Divine language is often a symbol of wisdom: Let your speech be savored with salt.'" - F. E. HULME, Symbolism in Christian Art, p. 210.
