REAPING AFTER SOWING

A symbol of the consummation of the soul-process, arrived at through the karmic law of cause and effect in the higher and lower natures.

“He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; the field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; the enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world (æon); and the reapers are the angels.” — Matthew xiii. 37–39.

The Son of man is the Higher Self born in the mind (man); the “field” is the arena of life, i.e. the lower nature (world); the children of the kingdom are the germs of the higher emotions proceeding from buddhi (kingdom); the children of the wicked one are the desires and passions proceeding from the lower principle (the devil). “Harvest” is the spiritual fruit of experience and endeavour to be gathered on the higher planes at the end of the cycle when the qualities and souls have attained perfection.

“In Sekhet‑hetepet, the field of Peace, the grain is three cubits high, and it is the perfect Spirits who reap it” (Papy. of Ani). — Budge, *Egypt. Heaven and Hell*, Vol. III, p. 47.

When the harvest of high qualities on the buddhic plane (field of peace) is fully (three) ripe, then the individualities (angels, or perfect spirits) realise its nature (reap it).

“Osiris reaps and I plough; yea and I also reap.” — *Book of the Dead*, Ch. CX.

The Self (Osiris) reaps; the lower Self ploughs and cultivates; and afterwards also the lower Self reaps as it realises its true nature. The personalities cannot reap except as they become merged in their individualities on the higher planes.

“And the servants say unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he saith, Nay; lest haply while ye gather up the tares, ye root up the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather up first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.” — Matthew xiii. 28–30.

The Higher Self points out that the desires and passions (the tares) are necessary for the growth of the soul, and that without them the higher qualities could not be evolved. The lower qualities must therefore remain until the end of the cycle, when the individualities will control and discard them for further purification (burning), but the higher qualities will be garnered on the buddhic plane.
