PRODIGAL SON, PARABLE

A symbol of the evolution of the soul in its emotion-nature (younger son) and its mental-nature (elder son).

"A certain man had two sons: and the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of thy substance that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living. And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country; and there he wasted his substance with riotous living." - Luke xv. 11-33.

The Father in heaven had two evolving attributes on the higher planes-mind and emotion. Unto each He apportions His substance; that is, He endows them with that whereby each shall accomplish its work of self-development on the respective planes on which they function. When the "younger son" receives his endowment, the evolution of the emotions begins. The soul descends to the lower planes, where to the ego it seems separated from the Father's influence, though that influence continues to work unseen above.

The "riotous living" signifies complete absorption in worldly affairs, desires, and the senses. Through this immersion the emotion-nature blindly gains experience, eventually awakening dissatisfaction and a yearning for something higher. The soul then turns homeward, and the Father responds with blessing. The mind is stirred to progress, and ultimately both mind and emotion are united and merged in the Divine.
