PLANETS, FIVE GREATER
These are symbols of mental centres of
functionings in the soul, which have each their special form of
activity.
"The planet Tistrya (Jupiter) presides over the division of troops
in the East, and is named Prince of the stars. Sitivisa (Saturn)
presides over the Western division; Vanant (Mercury) over that of
the South, and Hapto-iringa (Mars) over the star troops of the
North. the middle of the heavens is the great planet Mesch (Venus),
he leads the troops against Ahriman." - Zoroastrian System.
The planet Jupiter is a symbol of the Self in its directive function
on the higher mental plane. It leads and governs evolution from the
buddhic plane, as the positive function of Buddhi. Saturn
corresponds to the function which limits and defines, and determines
the cyclic periods in the decline or decay of things. Mercury, on
the other hand, signifies the function of activity, growth,
expansion, and gives impetus and momentum. Mars signifies power,
force, resistence, and will. Venus is the symbol of the astral
love-energy, which being related with the buddhic principle urges
the stream of the evolving life to pour itself forth in the forms
which are prepared to await its reception; and SO leads the advance
towards perfection.
“Mercury is the lord of education and science we owe to him our
knowledge, which comprises bad and good. . . . The Moon causes man's
body to grow and Mercury forms his mind. Then he comes under the
sway of Venus. The Sun gives him family riches or dominion; Mars
bravery and noblemindedness. Thereupon, under the guidance of
Jupiter, he prepares, by means of religious exercises, for the
journey to the world beyond, and he attains rest under the influence
of Saturn " (From the Basra Encyclopedia). - De Boer, Phil. in
Islam, p. 88.
