PAPYRUS BOAT OF ISIS

A symbol of the sacred scriptures, which serve as a vehicle of Divine Wisdom (Isis).

"Isis once more sets out in search of the scattered fragments of her husband's body, making use of a boat made of the reed Papyrus in order the more easily to pass through the lower and fenny parts of the country." - Plutarch, Isis and Osiris, § 18.

Then Wisdom, as it were, descends and endeavours to harmonise and discipline the qualities which are commencing to evolve. When once the Divine voice has been identified in the mind with the dramatic modes of expression in sacred writings, and the Scriptures are deemed binding, help is to be derived therefrom by the impressionable emotion-nature (fens), which catches in this means of declaration of Truth a hint of the message and meaning which is there to be interpreted by the earnest and devout soul.

"The papyrus is frequently mentioned in the colophons of Assur-banipal's tablets under the name of gis-li-khu-si, or grass of guidance.' Another ideographic name was gis-zu, 'vegetable of knowledge." " - Sayce, Rel. of Anc. Babyl., pp. 9, 10.
