NAVELA symbol of a point on the mental plane midway between the higher and lower natures. “That part of the vital air which is immortal is above the navel, and streams out by upward breathings; but that which is mortal passes by and away from the navel.” – Sata. Brāh., VI.7.1.11. That part of the active mind (air) which is immortal is above the lower nature and aspires upward; but that which is mortal is influenced by the desires and sensations which are below. “We worship the guardian angel of Gayo‑marathan (Gayomard) the righteous, who first listened to Ahuramazda’s thoughts and sayings; out of whose body he (Ahuramazda) formed the central mass (nâfô, ‘navel’) of the Aryan countries, the surface of the Aryan countries.” – M. Haug, Essays on the Religion of the Parsis, p. 211. The Divine nature (fravashi) of the Archetypal Man is extolled as carrying out the designs of the Supreme. From the form side (the body) of the Ideal Man, the mental plane (Iran) was evolved and divided centrally into higher and lower. “Delphi was regarded as the central point of the whole earth, and was hence called the ‘navel of the earth.’ It was said that two eagles sent forth by Jupiter, one from the east and the other from the west, met at Delphi at the same time.” – Smith’s Classical Dictionary. The “two eagles” signify that the Self above and the Self below, advancing in the soul from the opposite sides of spirit and matter, meet at the junction of the higher and lower minds, where the two become one in the resurrection of the lower Self from the dead (matter). |
