KARNA, SON OF THE SUN AND PRITHA

A symbol of self-esteem and personal dignity, produced by the Spirit (sun) acting through the natural order of emotion (Pritha).

"Karna exhibited in a high degree fortitude, chivalrous honour, self-sacrifice, and devotion. Especially remarkable for a liberal and generous disposition, he never stooped to ignoble practices like his friends the Kurus, who were intrinsically bad men." - Mon. Williams, Indian Wisdom, p. 384.

"Karna" was said to have been born "clothed in armour," and that "Indra conferred upon him enormous strength." This means that self-esteem is able from the first to withstand the assaults of the lower self-interests and is powerful to maintain an ideal of devotion (Indra). Nevertheless, self-esteem fights on the side of the desires (Kurus), and is finally slain by the personality (Arjuna) as it attains to selflessness and perfection.
