HYMN-SINGING

A symbol for aspiration through harmony and the uplifting of the nature towards Truth, Wisdom, and Love.

“So all day long worshipped they the gods with music, singing the beautiful pæan, the sons of the Achaians making music to the Far-darter, and his heart was glad to hear.” — Iliad, Bk. I.

So “all day,” i.e. during the out‑pouring of Life on the upper planes, the Higher Self was adored with “music,” the expression of the spirit of harmony. The Sons of Mind — the spiritual egos — were then attuned to the inspiration of the Self, and response was made.

“The world of the word is to the Indian another microcosm. In the rhythm of the sacred song he hears the echoes of the universe resound.” — Oldenberg, Buddha, etc., p. 27.

“The name for heaven is Garôdemana (Garotman in Persian), ‘house of hymns,’ because the angels are believed to sing hymns there, which description agrees entirely with the Christian idea as founded on Isaiah vi. and the Revelation of St. John.” — Haug, Essays on Rel. of Parsis, p. 311.
