HAUMIA-TIKITIKI, THE GOD AND FATHER OF THE FOOD OF MAN WHICH SPRINGS UP WITHOUT CULTIVATION

A symbol of the instinctive sensation-nature which receives impressions through the senses of the facts of the physical life, producing experience and knowledge as nourishment for the mind and soul.

“Tumatauenga determined also to be revenged upon his brothers Rongomatane and Haumia-tikitiki; he soon found them by their peculiar leaves, and he scraped into shape a wooden hoe, and plaited a basket, and dug in the earth and pulled up all kinds of plants with edible roots, and the plants which had been dug up, withered in the sun." - GREY, Polynesian Mythology, p. 11.

Wisdom and sensation were known through the relation of mind to the emotions and sense perceptions. The hoe and basket operations signify the astro-mental methods of dealing with experience, whereby the fruits of experience pass upwards.
