BIBLE VERSES

GALL

Symbolic of a sensuous gratification which would appear nauseous to the higher nature.

“They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink." - Ps. lxix. 21.

The lower qualities, "enemies" of the higher, offer the soul the pleasures of the life of the senses to satisfy its cravings for goodness and peace; and to its thirst for Truth, they offer ignorance which brings sorrow and strife. Not by indulgences from without can the soul be nourished and satisfied.

"I see that thou art in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity." - ACTS viii. 23.

“They gave him wine to drink mingled with gall and when he had tasted it, he would not drink." - MATTHEW xxvii. 34.
