FUDO, GOD OF FIRE

A symbol of the Higher Self (atma-buddhi).

"A Japanese Buddhist deity, wor- shipped as a god of fire. He sits, stern and 'immovable,' surrounded with flames, and holding a two-edged sword and a rope; the latter he uses like some of the Indian gods to restrain the wicked. The flames are interpreted as symbols of wisdom, of which he is also said to be a god (Murray)." - Non-classical Mythology, p. 71.

The “fire” and "flames" signify the buddhic plane, the plane of Wisdom. The "sword" is a symbol of the Divine Will exercised as spiritual force to dispel ignorance and evil. The " "indicates the rope buddhic functioning for the transmutation of the lower qualities into the higher. The "wicked are the lower desires which must be overcome and cast out of the soul. The lower qualities have to be purified by the spirit (fire) within them, so that the higher may evolve through them.
