FROST; ICE; SNOW
Symbolic of matter which in itself is lifeless, solid, and inert. A state of latency.
"Everything wept for Balder, men, animals, the earth, stones, trees, and all metals, even as thou hast seen everything weep when it comes forth from the frost into the warm air." - Story of Balder, Prose Edda. - HOWITT, Litera.
Within the entire nature of the soul the craving for liberation is manifest as the triumph of the Christ (Balder) approaches. The statement indicates the suffering of the lower nature from the outer aspect, through the shattering of the forms wherein the life is encased. The change from dry frost to moisture is a symbol of the relatively inert condition of congelation changing to that which is mobile and volatile. The contraction and holding is symbolic of matter. The expansion and allowing of escape is symbolic of spirit.
