FORTY DAYS OR YEARS
Symbolic of transitory conditions on the lower
planes attending the accomplishment of the pilgrimage of the soul
through a process and period.
"After the number of the days in which ye spied out the land, even
forty days, for every day a year, shall ye bear your iniquities,
even forty years, and ye shall know my alienation." - NUM. xiv. 34.
The disciplined qualities (the spies) were unable to make the lower
qualities (the Israelites) understand the higher nature. The lower
qualities had to go through to the full with their experience of the
lower life of suffering and trouble, in order to develop within them
the capacity to appreciate higher things. Then they should know how
it was that the Ideal was hidden from them.
