EVENING

Symbolic of the drawing in of a cycle towards its close. A period of calm, rest and accomplishment; a time when the stress and struggle of life are o'er, and when the noon-day heat is past. It is, at the same time, emblematic of a season of darkness, doubt, and despair, when the Self does not give his light, and when men's hearts,-unless they be firmly fixed upon their mission and realise their object,-fail them for fear and quake unutterably, "for looking for those things which are coming upon the earth," or lower nature at the end of a cycle.

"In the evening' signifies the end of a former state and the beginning of a new one."

"Between the evenings' signifies the last and the first state." - SWEDENBORG, Arc. Cel. to Gen. i.

"It shall come to pass that at evening time there shall be light." - ZECH. xiv. 7.
