COUNTENANCE, OR FACE

A symbol of a mental aspect of the feelings or emotions.

"But unto Cain and to his offering He had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?" - GENESIS. iv. 5, 6.

But the lower nature, as such, could not be received by the Higher. And the earlier stages of evolution of the lower self (Cain) are attended by a great sense of restraint and hardship. And the Higher Self questions within the lower mind as to why it is suffering through its experiences.

"By countenance' are signified the interiors, which are said to 'fall' when they are changed. 'Countenance' with the ancients signified internal things, because internal things shine forth through the countenance." - SWEDENBORG, Arc. Cel. to Genesis. iv. 5.
