BENNU BIRD

A symbol of the spiritual ego which aspires and rises upward from the lower nature of the soul.

“I go in like the Hawk and I come forth like the Bennu bird, the morning star of Ra.”

“And grant that I may sail down to Tattu like a living soul, and up to Abtu (Abydos) like a Bennu bird.” — Budge, Book of the Dead, pp. 20, 61.

The hawk descending on its prey symbolises the spiritual ego falling into matter from which it afterwards ascends to the buddhic plane. The “living soul” descends to the lower planes (Tattu) to rise again to the higher planes (Abtu). The “morning star,” or ascending soul, heralds the coming of its Lord the Sun of righteousness (Rā).
