BEASTS, ANIMALSSymbolic of desires, passions, and instincts of the lower nature. “And as many pretend that the soul of Typhon himself is divided amongst these animals, the fable may be thought to express enigmatically that every irrational and bestial nature belongs to the share of the Evil Spirit.” – Plutarch, Isis and Osiris, § 73. Beasts and animals represent the unreasoning impulses of the lower self—the instinctive, passionate, and emotional forces that arise from the astral and physical planes. These energies, when undisciplined, are associated with the chaotic and destructive tendencies symbolized by Typhon. When purified and offered up (as in sacrificial symbolism), they become transformed and subordinated to the higher nature. |
