ASAR, ÆSIR, OR ASES

A symbol of the three Divine Principles, or the Logos under the aspects of Will, Wisdom, and Activity.

"Then the three Ases of this band, full of power and goodness, descended towards the sea; they found in the country some wretched beings, Ask and Embla, needing destiny. They had no soul, they had no understanding, neither blood, nor language, nor good exterior; Odin gave the soul, Hoenir gave understanding, Lodur gave the blood and the good exterior."-Voluspa, 33-40.

Then the Logoi in might and love, descended, as it were, to the astral plane (sea) to endow the forms, now developed thereon, with human attributes. There they found in prehuman forms, Desire and Instinct, needing further powers of growth. These creatures had no spiritual or mental natures, no true life, no intelligent expression, no proper human forms. To these lower personalities the Divine Will (Odin) gave the Divine Spark, Wisdom (Hoenir) imparted the mind, and Activity (Lodur) through slow evolution brought about the inner life connections with the higher nature, and the effective, erect human form.

“Thereupon (Balder's death) the Asar (at Asgard) sent messengers over the whole world, and besought that all would weep Balder out of the power of Hell."-Prose Edda.

The Divine Triad establishes in the lower nature the means by which the indwelling Self (Balder) shall be released through the suffering of the lives in the forms. Thereupon the urgent necessity for the triumph of the Self becomes apparent, and within the entire nature a desire for liberation is manifest. This craving must needs be first of all thoroughly established in the lower self ere the prayer may penetrate to the sanctuary of the Higher One.
